In 1732 James Oglethorpe, a Member of the English Parliament, proposed that the area south of Charlesfort and north of the Spanish claimed lands of Florida be colonized. Oglethorpe and other English philanthropists secured a royal charter as the Trustees of the Colony of Georgia on June 9, 1732. With the motto, "Not for ourselves, but for others," the Trustees selected colonists for Georgia. On February 12, 1733, the first settlers arrived in the ship "Anne" at what was to become the city of Savannah.  Georgia was named in honor of King George II of Great Britain.

The City of Monroe is proud of its local education systems and the outstanding education options for area youth.

There are a number of financial incentives available within our city such as the qualified Opportunity Zone, Port Tax Credit Bonus, New Quality Jobs Tax Credit, and various Downtown Development Programs. Georgia 811 Notice
Call Georgia 811 by simply dialing "811" at least two business days prior to digging!   Who should call 811?

Everyone who plans to dig! In Georgia, it is the law.

Why should people call 811?

The main reason is safety. Having the approximate location of underground utility lines clearly marked before digging reduces the risk of hitting a line, which can lead to serious injury or death, disrupt service to the community and potential fines and repair costs.

Captain Matt McClung - Uniform Patrol Division Commander

Captain John Pilgrim - Criminal Investigation Division Commander

Captain Tracy Hanson - Administrative Services Division Commander

Monroe was incorporated as a city in 1821, shortly after the formation of Walton County in 1818.

There is little information about those early days; it is assumed that the county Sheriff would have handled any law enforcement needs back in those days.

The administrative section of the police department is the main point of public contact for information and clerical services. The admin section is currently staffed by two civilian employees and is open for business from 8am until 4:30pm, Monday thru Friday. We are located at 116 South Broad Street through the Police Department entrance.

Listed below are fees for various services provided by the admin section. Payment must be made by check or money order only; cash will not be accepted at the police window.

The Uniform Patrol Division is the most visible portion of the Monroe Police Department.  Uniformed officers operating marked police vehicles provide 24-hour patrol services and response to calls for assistance.

The Patrol Division operates on 12-hour shifts, with a Sergeant or Lieutenant in charge of each shift, and several officers working with them.

The Criminal Investigation Division of the Monroe Police Department is responsible for followup investigation of calls and incidents which fall outside the scope of the Uniform Patrol Division.

Offenses are separated as crimes against persons and crimes against property, then resources are allocated by severity of the criminal act (felony or misdemeanor), and futher catagorized by presence or absence of witnesses or physical evidence used to complete an investigation of the incident.

Kent Hobart (Vice President Operations Southern Gas Association) -  We’ve been very fortunate to have Tommy Arnold of the Georgia Utility Training Academy teach a Leak Investigation and Grading class for us the last two years as part of our SGA Spring Gas Conference.  We gather feedback from class participants after the training and feel strongly the most important question we ask is “Would you recommend this class to a coworker?”  The average score from GUTA’s 2016 class was 9.93 on a 10 point scale.  The highest of the over 30 workshops we offered during the conference.

Childers Park

Childers Park is a 17-acre passive park in the heart of the City of Monroe, two blocks from the Walton County historic courthouse. In 2009, Friends of Walton County, a private non-profit organization, in partnership with the City of Monroe, began working to turn the property from an overgrown kudzu hill into a functioning park with almost a mile of walking trails, a dog park, and natural play elements for children. Every holiday season the park is filled with light displays for the community to enjoy.

Monroe PRS Trailhead

Project Road Share is a cycling project started here in Walton County that aims to promote safe cycling in our region as a way to live an active and healthy lifestyle. Project Road Share Trail Heads act as a type of trail system that interconnects covering the safe riding areas in our county. The Monroe route, which is one of three trailheads, connects to the cycling routes in Good Hope and Social Circle.

Walton County Historic Courthouse

Shortly after Walton County was created in Dec. 1818, court was held in a cow barn. Other buildings served as seat of government until the county's first courthouse was completed in 1823. That building served until 1845, when another courthouse was built. Walton County's third courthouse was completed in 1884. The original clock tower and dome were destroyed by a tornado in 1885. The courthouse roof remained flat until the current tower was added in 1907. The building underwent major restorations in 1933, 1969, and 1996.

MWCA

The Monroe Walton Center for the Arts was founded in 1993 as the Monroe Art Guild. A group of local artists discovered each other as a result of a severe weather downburst which did significant damage to downtown Monroe. The community came together to make restorations through various fundraising events and activities. A benefit art show was among these efforts organized to help raise funds to repair the damage to downtown. Held at the McDaniel-Tichenor House, it provided the seed for the group of artists to come together and form a guild.

McDaniel-Tichenor House

Born in Monroe in 1836, Henry Dickerson-McDaniel was the son of Ira McDaniel, one of the first professors of Mercer University, and an important businessman in his own right. McDaniel Street in Atlanta is named for Ira. Graduating from the head of his class at Mercer, and admitted to the bar soon afterwards, Henry must have envisioned a peaceful life as a small-town lawyer, but this wasn't to be. Despite his trepidation regarding the wisdom of breaking from the North, Henry McDaniel attended the state's secession convention as its youngest delegate.

Monroe Walton Library

As part of the Azalea Regional Library System, the Monroe-Walton County Library is able to offer patrons with a valid PINES library card free access to:

Davis Edwards House

The Davis-Edwards House is one of the oldest structures in Walton County. The house was named to reflect the fact that two families - one following the other - lived in the house for almost 125 years.

The Parks division is responsible for the upkeep, maintenance, and growth of City owned parks and similar facilities. The parks system will see positive advancements with changes in current agreements and the recent SPLOST vote. The Parks division will see more activity 2020 as funding becomes available. Childers Park and Pocket Park were the only parks maintained and controlled by the City of Monroe for the past 20 plus years, with additional parks being the responsibility of Walton County.

Turtle

Pilot Park is located in the historic district on approximately 1.81 acres and is a little over .25 miles east of downtown Monroe at 515 East Church Street. It was the first park to receive a full rehabilitation in our city, and was reopened to the public in October of 2020. The rehabilitation included new ADA compliant playground equipment, benches, picnic tables, trash receptacles, swings, fencing, entrance signage, walkways, and landscaping! The project was completely funded by a portion of the SPLOST 2019 collections as voted on by Walton County voters!

Sign

Mathews Park is located on approximately 28.71 acres and is a little over 1.7 miles northeast of downtown Monroe at 1016 East Marable Street. The park has been completely rehabilitated over multiple years in two separate phases, funded completely by SPLOST 2019 collections. The first phase of rehabilitation began in 2020 and included additional playground equipment, benches around the lake, picnic tables, trash receptacles, grills, swings, painted pavilions, entrance signage, and new restroom facility.

Hammock Park

Situated on .35 acres in downtown Monroe, Hammock Park has become the place to relax and enjoy one of the numerous hammocks, swings, or picnic tables! This open space saw the addition of multiple hammocks in 2018, picnic tables in 2019, and swings in 2021 for visitors. The Rotary Club of Monroe has been of assistance with funding and sponsoring the different activities at Hammock Park.

HAMMOND PARK IS CURRENTLY CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC!

Pocket Park

Pocket Park sits almost in the middle of downtown Monroe!! It is the perfect spot to take a break from shopping, dining, and walking in downtown Monroe! There are benches, tables, and some historical elements of Monroe that make for a quaint and peaceful visit! Be sure to check out the Downtown Monroe portion of our website and calendar for events that take place throughout the year at this little park in the heart of Monroe!

Childers Park Entrance

Childers Park, named for William R. Childers, Jr., is a 17 acre passive park in the heart of Monroe, two blocks west of the Walton County historic courthouse. In 2009, Friends of Walton County, a private non-profit organization, in partnership with the City of Monroe, began working to turn the property from an overgrown kudzu hill into a functioning park with almost a mile of walking trails, a dog park, and natural play elements for children that include hillside slides.

Dennis Sanders Coker

Dennis S. Coker Park, named for Dennis Sanders Coker, is located approximately 1.3 miles southeast of Downtown Monroe, and is currently closed and awaiting complete renovation and reopen to the public. Coker Park was once home to several baseball/softball fields, pavilion, and restroom facility. Sadly, the park was allowed to fall into disrepair and closed due to safety concerns.

Swings

Green Street Park is located on approximately 1 acre and is a little over .8 miles northwest of downtown Monroe at 321 Mayfield Drive. The park has a basketball court and swing set for the nearby residents.

Swings

This 1.67 acre award winning urban style park is located at 306 South Madison Avenue and will be the anchor for downtown to provide a space for hosting a multitude of events for citizens and visitors to include concerts, theatrical performances, jazz bands, holiday events, orchestras, back to school celebrations, and other city sponsored events. The splash pad has also been a highly enjoyed staple of daily activity during the summer months from Memorial Day until mid-October.

Garden Box
The City of Monroe community garden is located at Pilot Park at 515 East Church Street which is a little over .25 miles east of downtown Monroe.   What is a community garden?

A community garden is a piece of land gardened by a group of people for the production of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. In 2020, the City of Monroe began a local pilot project with the Community Garden.

Situated on .35 acres in downtown Monroe, Monument Park (formerly Hammock Park) has taken a historical step back into what was once the MONROE sign on the Wayne Street water tank. This sign stood for many years and was famously taken down after being damaged by down-burst storms that came through Monroe in 1993. Since then, many discussions have taken place to replace the sign with no successful or allowable options on the existing water tanks or structures in the community. Monument Park is now home to a replica of that MONROE sign that stood for so many years.
